Why Veterans Produce

I remember... it was a particularly cold & rainy November night when I met Tony. Tony is a Vietnam era Army veteran who was camped out next to an abandoned "Wolfe Nursery" warehouse close to my home.  I had seen him in the area several times before but for some reason I felt an overwhelming desire to stop and check on him this night.

He told me of his story of being "Down on this Luck" because of certain life events he ended up in a local veterans shelter.  He continued telling me how he had been robbed of all of his possessions and his Veterans ID so now he was unable to stay at the Veterans Shelter.

This is very personal for me for several reasons besides being a veteran, a small town farm boy from Indiana, a Retired Chief Petty Officer from the United States Navy, I still remember being embarrassed as a young boy being sent off to several different neighbors houses to “borrow” some food items so we could eat that night, not to mention... unpredictably later in life, after a divorce, I found myself homeless, living in my truck, unemployed and broke.

Needless to say... it breaks my heart to see anyone struggling like this. This was the day I decided that I had to do something, that was the day Veterans Produce was born.

Why Veterans Need You To Get Involved

The Actual Number Of Hungry Veterans Is Closer to 100,000 Every Night

And This Is Where They End Up After Bravely Serving Our Country...?

We know many homeless veterans are never counted in these point-in-time surveys because they choose not to visit a shelter, never identify themselves as a veteran or female veterans that worry about their safety at a shelter, not to mention the vast number of "Food Insecure" Veterans.

Why Veterans Need You To Get Involved

Food Insecurity Is Rising Fast

And This Is Where They End Up After Bravely Serving Our Country...?

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs reports that 1.5 million veterans live in poverty, and poverty rates are rising. Increasing poverty among veterans has profound implications for their food security and health. One of the fastest growing and youngest groups of veterans—those who served after September 11, 2001—is more likely to have a service-connected disability than veterans from other service periods. These factors suggest working-age veterans are vulnerable to issues with food insecurityThe Wall Street Journal and Military Times have recently referenced The Pentagon's statement that 24% of Active Duty Servicemembers are food insecure.

Help Veterans Produce Feed Veterans "One Greenhouse, One Community, One Tony At A Time"

What started out as offering to feed Tony, has now developed into a training and internship program, a skills development program teaching veterans how to grow via aquaponics and hydroponics. They learn how to operate and build greenhouses to duplicate the Veterans Produce model expanding across the nation.

Although this started with Tony, there are so many thousands of veterans we can do this for. But I need your help getting this done. We are attacking this problem from a "Grassroots Level", grow and harvest food and take it directly to feed homeless veterans in our communities.
On the farm as a boy, I learned the value of having Healthy Food. Now I know that healthy food is paramount to healthy body and mind.

AS SEEN ON:

“By this kind of hard work we must help the weak... It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
